From what I understand, about 10% of the time a woman naturally releases more than 1 egg (usually it's only 2 eggs though).
Some women may release 2 eggs more often and that could be hereditary.
Diet may play a role. Women who eat a diet high in real yams have a higher rate of twins. Women who are more well nourished also have a higher rate of twins.
In terms of identical twins, I've heard that the man's heredity might play a role. Something about the sperm may make the fertilized egg more likely to split.

There are a few contributing factors. I have twins myself and was not taking any fertility drugs. Multiple births can run on one side of the family, believe it or not weight can be a contributing factor, overweight woman have a slightly increased chance of multiple births, just coming off birth control can increase the odds of multiple births. Also once you have one set of multiples your chance for having another set goes from 1 in 80 to 1 in 20.

-My side of my mothers family has identical twins running thru so possibly I can have twins.
-If one egg is seperated into 2[after fertilized] and becomes 2 embyros
-If two eggs seperate into 2[after fertilized]and become four embryos
-If 1 egg seperates into 2 [after fertilized] and another egg is also fertilized u can have triplets.
-If more than one egg releases from your ovaries at one time, and they all get fertilized.
-& As u said..fertility drugs

As others have said, hereditary is a factor.
Another factor is subsequent births. They thought that my 5th pregnancy was with twins.. apparently, every subsequent pregnancy, your likelihood of multiples goes up.

Identical twins pop up whenever.
Now fraternal twins tend to be hereditary.
My mother-in-law is a twin that had boy/girl twins--her mother had two sets of boy/girl twins.
