The private prisons in my state are not as good as some of the public ones, but I'll tell you what I know. I'm a lawyer and I represent a Detention Center that houses state and federal prisoners. We have not been sued by an inmate in something like 15 years. We treat our prisoners very well, so keep that in mind when I tell you what I see. If you're lucky, you get one of the few prison jobs available in the kitchen or laundry and if you're not violent, you get placed in an individual cell that opens on a common area. There will be about 20-30 inmates in your unit. You can go outside an hour a day. You can set in the common area with the other inmates the rest of the time and watch Spanish language tv.
If you're violent or not lucky, you spend the day locked in your cell alone and can exercize for an hour in an in-door gym. You can make unlimited phone calls to your atty. You can have phone contact and visits from family a hour a day, 3 days a week. You will not interact with the other inmates.
When you check in--you have to shower with a disinfecting shampoo. Not as horrible as you'd think, but there's a gang problem. We've been ok so far. I've made it sound ok, maybe, but this is a REAL good jail. Got an A+ on the fed'l level. Very good warden. That's all I can think to tell you.

Never been there myself, but for all of the bitchin people do about their experiences in prison ... a significant number of people go back for a second, third or even fourth time!

If it was so bad, you would think that these people would do whatever is necessary to stay out after the first time! So IMHO it just can't be as bad as these excons make it out to be.

Prison is cold and bleak. My wife used to work in a county jail in NJ, in the infirmary. Even though it was a nice jail (as jails go) spending 24 hours a day there is not recommended. I believe boredom is a major issue in jails.

My husband did 3 years. Boredom gets to you b/c you have to do the same thing everyday. And CO only allow you to do certain things. You learn self perservation really fast.
