density of air = 1.29 g/mole at STP
density of oxygen = 1.429 g/mole at STP
density of CO2 = 1.45 g/mole at STP

so blowing oxygen into a balloon would make it sink.

But I think you mean blowing up a balloon with the gas in our lungs. which contains CO2. denser still. Not to mention that fact that the balloon is squeezing the vapor in the balloon because it is elastic. making it denser yet.

regardless, the balloon is denser than the surrounding air and will sink. try it....

on the other hand, filling the same balloon with helium will cause it to float up. density of helium = .179 g/l at STP (1/7th the density of air)

No. The "mole weight' of air is 28.96 while that of O2 is 32. The balloon would actually sink.

Air is mostly nitrogen (78%) which is more dense than pure oxygen. So that's why it would float.

It doesn't, filled with Helium it will.
