Graphic designers design products that are designed to communicate information about something. Advertisements, book layouts, magazines, web graphics, etc. are all products of graphic designers.
To be good at one, you must be good with using symbols to communicate information. Being good at drawing is helpful, but not as much of a deal-breaker as it used to be, thanks to advances in technology (e.g. Photoshop).
Pay scales vary, depending on where the designer works. Freelance designers can make anywhere from 50-80k per year, and sometimes more. If they are employed by a creative agency, the pay scale is similar. This is an industry where skill really sets you apart; the better you are, the more you are capable of earning. Tenure also contributes to pay, as does position within companies. An Art Director will make more than a Designer for instance.

That's a loaded question these days... Most graphic designers are skilled in a variety of different programs and work in many industries. I would start looking into schools that offer degrees in graphic design, and ask questions. The "California Institute of the Arts" is a great place to start.
You'll soon discover that graphic designers are employed in a great many fields such as packaging, print design, interior design, and a host of other fields that you might not think would apply.
