Okay, here's the situation. I recently got a medical condition which caused me to leave work on short term disability. My disability was approved through the insurance company and I have been getting payments from my employer. My disability is still ongoing and is up for review again in two weeks. I got a certified letter today from my employer stating that they are rehiring for my position, that I will continue to get paid on disability, but once my doctor releases me, I would have to reapply to get a job within the organization. So essentially, I have been let go, but will continue to get benefits/pay as long as I am on disability.

This not only seems unfair to me, but seems illegal.

Yes, it is legal. While you were out, they apparently reviewed your status and felt they could do without you.
Here are some tips. Brush up your resume, and start looking. Now, once your disability benefits end and you are still not working, you might be eligible for unemployment benefits.Call them and ask.
, You might consider yourself "on vacation." and now is the time to look for other work.

If anyone asks, just tell them I am out sick ( or whatever) but hope to be cleared to go back to work soon. As for why you were left go, just say you were out sick, and they terminated your employment.
Based on your situation, it is questionable if another position might be available. You mght apply, but be prepared if it doesn't work out.

Good luck.

PS, Good write -up, very factual. You do mention it might be illegal, and you don't think it's fair but you don' dwell on this.

It isn't illegal. In most states, a company has the right to terminate anyone for any reason or for no reason, as long as it's not because of their membership in a legally protected class (e.g. due to their race, gender, religion). At least you'll continue to get paid on disability while you are unable to work. After that, if they don't hire you back, you'd have to just look for another job.

it is not significant in case you have no longer saved in touch with previous employers, you nonetheless positioned them down as evidence which you have worked and have some adventure. Its no longer a attractiveness contest its just to coach which you have had previous adventure.
