That is what a homophobe would be according to the accepted rules of word derivation. It might behoove the gay agenda crowd to pay attention to the rules of the language the next time they decide to pull a new word from their overused posteriors.

yoda: "Ain't" is in the dictionary as well. That doesn't mean it's correct or acceptable. Thank you for playing. You proved your ignorance. Dismissed.

mixed: I "get" it from a knowledge of the English language and the accepted manners of word derivation, in this case from the Greek. I don't particularly care what Wikipedia says about it.

romare: it comes from the questions surrounding Gen. Pace's comments. I am not homophobic, as I fear neither myself nor homosexuals. I simply do not like them or their chosen lifestyle.

rukidding: I dislike the "phobia" part as much as I do the "homo" part. I do not fear them, I simply dislike them.

Homophobia is the unreasoning fear of, aversion to, or discrimination against homosexuality or homosexuals.[1] It can also mean hatred, hostility, or disapproval of homosexual people, sexual behavior, or cultures, and is generally used to insinuate bigotry.[2] The term homophobic means "prejudiced against homosexual people,"[3] and a person who is homophobic is a homophobe.

If you look up the word, it is defined as a fear of homosexuals. That is where the word comes from.
HOMOsexual phobia. That is homophobia.
I mean, the english language is full of words like this, and still they exist. You could spend a lifetime complaining about words that are very contradictory or "inaccurate". But we make due with them - errors and all.

I agree with con-woman. I have 2 gay sisters. Just because I don't support their lifestyle doesn't mean that I am 'afraid' of them. Quite the contrary---if you think about it, who is the one who is "scared". It's the gay's ---they are afraid of us straights not accepting their lifestyle as "normal" so the un-politically correct thing to say is that they are "heterophobic", but like the old saying goes, the squeaky wheel gets the grease.

I will be sure to bring up these issues at our weekly "gay agenda" meetings {wed, 7 pm at the ACLU}

Hey, Rick, did your question come from people calling you homophobic? I'm just wondering, because that last sentence of yours has a real hateful feeling to it. And usually people who rant and rave against homsexuals turn out to be ... let's say, Ted Haggard-like. Know what I mean?

Actually, I know many people who are afraid of their own shadow, which is pretty close....
But you are correct -- by the literally translation of the component parts, the word should not mean what it has come to mean.
But "homo" doesn't mean self. It means "same" -- as in homogenous.

homophobia, by definition, is an intense and irrational aversion to homosexuals and homosexuality. I do not know where you get this definition of homophobia being an exhibition of fear of oneself....

Most people are in fact afraid of themselves. It is why the entertainment industry exists: to give you something to do other than introspection.
