Unfiltered water? Yes, but....
Dirty water no, they will eventually die from some disease or the other or from ammonia poisoning, or from a lack of oxygen. So if the unfiltered water is clean they will be fine.

Goldfish can live in unfiltered water but it certainly is much easier to filter it, given the amount of mess (seen and unseen) they create. If you don't have a filter, you will need to siphon the bottom of your tank and do partial water changes every couple of days or at least a once a week (depending on how large your tank is). Some posters have said that goldfish survive in ponds without filtration - that isn't quite true. Most people who have ponds actually have filters for them. Those who don't, use plants to help provide natural filtration. Also, someone said that bettas live in dirty water - this also isn't quite true. They may live in muddy water - but the ammonia, etc. created from them (the fish) is filtered out naturally through the dirt and plants.

Goldfish are some of the nastiest fish. They are a form of carp. Even if you keep them in a filtered aquarium, they will manage to get the water dirty. If you do not use a filter, I reccomend that you change the water at least once every week and a half. And remember to use room temp water and dechlorinator. But they will keep a tank dirty.

I am not proud of this, but: I have a 10 gallon aquarium w/ 2 goldfish, i have had them for about a year and a half. I have not changed the water in at least 8-9 months. At first I was gung-ho about cleaning it out, and now its just a pain in the neck. I use this solution called Am-Quel, which removes chlorine and ammonia from the water. Just a cap ful in the aquarium once a month, and my goldfish seem perfectly happy. Although, if you have the goldfish in a bowl with no filter, unfortunately, you will probably have to change the water. *tip* Beta Fish (japanese fighting fish) are native to the rice pattys in China, where the water is so dirty, its not even clear - they can really live in dirty water (again, not proud that i'm too lazy to clean my aquarium, but very thankful that i can take good care of my fish with Am-Quel) :)

if you monitor the levels of things like ammonia and nitraite and nitrites and all that stuff and keep them in safe levels constantly (this would take a lot of work), then they can live in unfiltered water, however this would not be dirty water.
however, even the smallest and youngest godlfsih houldn't be kept in less than 10gallons per goldfish, so there's no reason to not have a filter unless you want to create extra work for yourself.

Not for long. The longer water sits-the more oxygen it loses. Dirty water usually indicates the presence of bacteria. Most bacteria in water live off of oxygen and excrete carbon dioxide which fish can't breath. Fish NEED oxygen to survive. To get oxygen they filter oxygen out of the water through their "gill" openings. Dirty/bacteria laden water can also cause alot of diseases which can be fatel to fish (Ex: ICH). So please clean their water- be carefull to avoid big temperature extremes in the fresh vs. old water-this can cause "shock" in fish and they can die. Also-if you are on city water vs well water- need to get rid of chlorine in the water. Both of these can be accomplished by letting the fresh water sit in the same room as the goldfish for 24 hrs. before changing their water (assuming your gold fish are not in a heated tank).

they might survive, but they won't do well. You can keep them in unfiltered water, just make sure to change part of the water regularly to get rid of waste and ammonia. If left in dirty water too much or long, they will eventually get sick and suffer from many problems including bloody fins, fin rot, fungus and even burned skin.

I do not think so, if you have a fish tank I think you would need some sort of filtration system, but then again, sometimes you see people putting goldfish in ponds that they have in their yards, to be certain I would check with a pet store that specializes in fish.
