While getting some feeder fish at Petco the other day, I saw an absolutely gorgeous betta. I didn't have anywhere to keep him at the time, so I left him there, but when he was there the next time I went, I had to buy him. I've never seen one this color and pattern before. Can someone help me figure out what he's called?

He's greenish blue with a black face and white over where his gills are. Around each of his scales is a darker blue-black net pattern. His fins (except for the top one) are the color of his body half way and then white.

Here are some pictures of him.

If I decide to breed him to try to get more this color, what color female should I get?

I know he's a beauty...and Petco of all places. I can't belive no one bought him between the times I was there! And absolutely no red on him.

He's a "he" - unless females build bubble nests! Short fins though. :(

I did try to find another one, either male or female, but no luck.

Is there a name for the "net" pattern on the scales?

He is very cool! Great find! Nice pictures of him too. Now for what he is called....

He doesn't really fit easily into any IBC classification because he has traits from several different ones. You can see the green and black traits pretty easily, he also has a little bit of a butterfly pattern going on, but not enough to qualify as a butterfly. There is some bicolor going on too, but again not enough to call him a bicolor. If I were you though, I wouldn't worry about all of that, you have a beautiful fish.

If you want to get more of that color from breeding him here's a few tips. First, whatever you do DO NOT breed him to any female with even a hint of red!! That will cover up the green in a heartbeat! I would also steer clear of yellow as well. Breed him to light blue (steel blue it's called in the IBC) or even better to a female with some green. If you found that one in your area, odds are good there are some females in your area from the same line with ome of the same color. Time for a scavenger hunt through any local pet shops. While your in the shops, tell the owner what you are looking for and leave your name and phone number, maybe they will call if they find one for you or better yet they might know a local breeder breeding greens.

Also, notice on his gill plates... see the white areas near the edge? That's called opaque in IBC terms. Avoid getting a female with that on her body, it will cover up the green too.

Very best of luck breeding him, he's worth the effort! If you need any help drop me a line, I have been breeding bettas over 20 years.

Boy! He's gorgeous. I have never seen one like him before so you should keep your eye out for a female like him. If you can't find one try breeding him to a LIGHT blue so he'll be the dominate color. My 4 brothers and me are all getting our own Bettas, should I get really red or purple and blue mixed?

That's one nice betta. =) For the same colors you could try to get the same or near the same but the chances of getting the same color depend on chance and the DNA of the fish. Some traits are passe along while others aren't. It all depends on the fish and their genes. Just try to get the same or similar looking one or you could introduce more colors and create an even better looking betta with different colors. It's all up to you though.

that actually looks like a female betta to me. Males are generally more colorful, and although the picture makes it look bright, I think the dullness around the gills and the size of the fins might blow *her* cover. The males have striking tails and fins that are very flowy and long. This picture looks like it has shorter fins and a stout tail.. I may be wrong, but I have had 6 bettas in my day, all males, and their tails and fins are very long and regal.

Well at bettatalk.com he would be classified as 'patterened' betta. He is quite handsome.
