Some circuit breakers work on magnetics. If a given amount of current passes through the circuit breaker, a known amount of magnetic force is produced in a coil inside the breaker, which actuates a leverage that trips the breaker mechanism and opens the circuit.

Well, last winter I had 5 strings of lights plugged together and it blew the breaker, and the socket they were plugged into. Had to have both replaced....$$$$$$$.

It trips - sometimes it can burn out if the load is excessive like an electric heater.
