why is pulling tags off your matress against the law

It isn't. It's illegal for retailers to remove those tags since both the information and the color of the tag tells the consumer whether or not the mattress is new, used, or re-done. Never buy a mattress without a tag or without looking at both sides of it. (I don't watch my local consumer reporter for nothing!)

It's only illegal for people selling matresses. Many years ago companies would take old matresses out of the trash, refurbish them, then sell them as "new." The tag law is because of that.

It's not illegal if you own the mattress. Since mattress are flammable and such the tag has to stay on until it's bought. Some shady retailers might try and rip the tag off to lie about the mattress and what it's made of

Honey, if it is yours, you can. Take note, it says "to be removed by consumer only"....that "consumer" is you. The reason it can't be removed before that is that every consumer should know exactly what he/she is buying.
I understand it was also used in the event of allergies to certain filling in mattresses.

Go on....go rip off that tag now that you are at liberty do do so...it is a nice experiance.

Take care.
