I took a promotion and now my husband has been offered a position with his company to relocate to a different state. He accepted. However, they still have not moved me into my new position and plan on doing so in 2 weeks (8 weeks after I accepted). I'm not sure what to do. I am afraid to tell them that I will be leaving (given the circumstances that they think I will be changing departments) in the next month because we just bought a house and we need as much income as possible. I would love to tell them so they could search for another candidate as long as I knew my current job was secure until I needed to leave.

So what do you suggest? Tell and deal with the consequences? Or use give 2 weeks? I feel I should tell them before they move me to my new position because a week after moving to the new dept, I would have to put in my 2 weeks. But telling them too early could be risky for me! HELP!

I deeply admire you for doing the right thing and moving with your husband. Tell your company as quickly as possible. You will want a job in your new location, so you don't want to burn any bridges with your current employer. Hopefully, they won't give you any flack for accepting the position and then leaving. However, these kinds of things happen all the time. It's life. Give them an opportunity to find a new person. I hope all goes smoothly and you find a new position quickly.

Have you and your husband talked about maybe living seperately for a few months? I know this would be hard, but this way you could get the extra money and extra experience under your belt, and it would be beneficial in the long run. If this isn't an option, then I would tell them now before you get moved into your job, it wouldn't be fair to your company, and they will give you a better letter of recommendation once you do leave. Good luck to your hubby and yourself on his new job and your move!

The sooner you tell them the better. Because when you do move to another state this company can give you a good reference to your future employer. If you wait until the last minute it will cause bad blood between you and you won't get as good of a reference as you would have liked.

You are just a commodity to your company something that they use to make money. They are not showing you any respect waiting 10 weeks to promote you. Look out for number 1 that is exactly what your company would do.

References do not exist anymore all your company will say the dates you worked there and your title.

Unless you feel guilty and that would affect just play the game and wait to tell them.

You really need to tell them...It's not like you are giving your notice...you are just giving them the option to let you start the new position or stay where you are...if they let you go...then you can draw umemployment...the only way you couldn't is if you quit...which you are not doing.
