Are they dark or light-colored? I think they are a dark grayish black color but my friend says its a light, whitish color. Who's right? or are both of us wrong?

Hi. When Haley's comet made it's last appearance, a probe sent to photograph it found that the surface was the darkest ever measured on a space body. But this comet had been through many orbits so this may no be typical. My guess would be that a 'fresh' comet would be shades of gray. http://www.answers.com/topic/giotto-mission

That depends on the material the comet is made of. There are comets made of metal and rocks, which are dark, but there are aswell comets mostly made out of ice and rocks, which are whitisch.
