What is your favorite Memoirs of a Geisha character and why?

Mine is Hatsumomo, even though she is a bit evil, she's actually just doing what she was taught. To compete.

I'm going to assume that everyone who reads this answer has already read the entire book, so I'm not spoiling anything.

Anyway, my favorite character is Nobu, the Chairman's best friend. I feel like this character has been spat upon by everyone he encounters despite his generous and kind soul. When I read "Memoirs of a Geisha", I look at it as a tragedy of this poor man that fate has cursed. Certainly, he is not a pleasant man, but who can blame him? He is horribly disfigured by jumping on a grenade to save the life of his friend, the Chairman. To live such a life is a burden that is excruciatingly difficult.

Despite the harsh exterior, Nobu is a good man. Nobu takes care of Sayuri during the war when no one else will save her. And how does she repay him? She instead wants a world of materialism and skin-deep beauty of the Chairman. Despite all that Nobu has done for Sayuri, she cannot see past the disfigured face of Nobu. No amount of generosity and kindness will be enough for Sayuri to love the man who will give everything for her.

But it is not just that Sayuri cannot love Nobu. She falls in love with and marries the Chairman! The very man that Nobu trusts the most. Nobu even risked his life and will forever carry the scar of his sacrifice, but that is not enough for Nobu to find happiness in life. Instead, he is given deceit by his closest companions. Truly, there is no one else in the book who is more tragic than the honorable Nobu.

Because of Nobu's warm heart in spite of the hardship and pain he endured in life, I count him as my favorite character, bar none.

As a character in a book forgetting the movie - Sayuri for her grace, sense of business and ability to take care of herself and carve out a life for herself. To me, Sayuri is a good example of Taoism at work. C.
