Does the hamster refuse to chew anything but the material its cage was made of? You need to find something that it will chew on so that it can wear down its teeth. Wood is best, but hard dog biscuits will help as well.
You can clip the teeth on your hamster yourself, but only do this if the hamster is well tamed in your hands and you are sure that its teeth are too long. Nail clippers can be used to clip rodent teeth; just do not clip them too short.
By the way, I don't agree with the person that believes that the market value of a hamster is equal to its total value. if a hamster is a loved member of a family it is obviously worth more than the $5.00 that it might have cost in a pet store. Unfortunately, I know how high vet bills can be.

It really sounds like he needs his teeth clipped. Hamsters teeth grow continuously and need to be worn down by chewing. Now that he is in a chew proof cage, he has nothing to wear them down with and you say he wont use the sticks. He wont be able to eat his food which would explain him becoming skinny.
If you go to a vet explain that you have no money and they may clip them for free as it would only take a minute to do. Failing that try and find an RSPCA pet hospital near you who would give him treatment for free.
The cost of the vet would only be ablout £10 by the way.

Take it to the PDSA clinic where they should be able to help if you are on benefits. Why get a pet that will inevitably require vet treatment at some stage in its little life, when you know you cant afford a few bob at the veterinary surgery. Perhaps you could ring your local surgery and explain the situation, and they may keep the bill down for you. Surely they wouldn't allow an animal to suffer just for the sake of a few quid. It may need its teeth trimming and that wont cost much - but ASK - surely its worth a phone call, the little creature is obviously suffering. Good luck and I hope all goes well.

My hamster like to chew his cage too, I just let him as he seem enjoy it a lot. You can try Cedar wood, last time I bought him a small block of cedar wood to chew, he seems to like it. He need to chew something in order to keep his teeth in the right length, otherwise he can't eat, it might be why he is skinny..or it also could be that he doesn't like the food..can try different food instead. Also, you can buy him a hamster ball for him to roll around inside your home, hamster need exercise, my hamster like this advanture so much :)
Good luck from Hong Kong!!

No, you need to get him to the vet to get his teeth trimmed. This is very dangerous and can be fatal. The teeth will continue to grow into his head and kill him if not trimmed. Go to the link below and learn more on the problems allowing your hamster to chew on the bars. They also give ideas on what to do for your hamster and his chewing habits.
Go beg, borrow, or barter for the money or ask the vet for payments, but get it done yesterday!!! I will not pay bill if I have to to take care of my pets if needed.

No...he needs to have his teeth cut down. This happens when you do not provide enough things for your hamster to chew on. Every pet store has colored wood blocks in the hamster isle. You should have been purchasing these.
With this aside...if you do not take your hamster to the vet it will starve to death. The long teeth are preventing him from eating his food. Call around to different vets...most will take a payment plan if you do not have enough to pay all at once.

I do think the vet is the best option but saying that our hamster is very similar so when we changed cages we took apart his old cage and he chewed that to his hearts content!
Good Luck

PDSA don't charge if your on benefits. Most pet shops will give free advice on woods that the wee man can chew on.
Or go to your local library and find a book on keeping Hamsters.
