Well Cuba's been under Castro for a number of years, why would it be in Bush's interest to do it now.
You are correct that Castro does get a check each month from the US gov't for lease of Guantanamo, however he has never cashed any of these checks.
The embargo has never worked, Cuba is still under Castro over 40 years after the embargo was put in place.
We did try to kill Castro at least 8 times, back when the foreign policy allowed us to kill other countries leaders. However, we never succeeded.
Now the whole thing is just a determination of wills. I'm actually a little afraid of what will happen once Castro dies. The reason he had come into power is that the US basically controlled the island and the leaders they had put into power corrupted the country.

It has no oil and it is the best selling tool the GOP has to keep a voting block in place. They ignore the Cuban exiles until the election cycle, trot out the Diaz-Balarts and Ross Lehtinens and then talk about Fidel and how horrible he is "Vote Republican" then they go back to doing what they do until the next time.
The Cuban exiles in Miami acted as if Castro developed in a vacuum and everything was hunky dory in Cuba before the "bad" man Fidel Castro Ruz came into power
In 1934 Fulgencio Batista took over the Cuban government in what became known as "The Revolt of the Sergeants." He ruled Cuba with an iron fist, and the full blessing and endorsement of the United States government, who feared a social and economic revolution and saw him as a stabilizing force with respect for American interests. Batista established lasting relationships with organized crime, and under his guardianship Havana became known as "the Latin Las Vegas." Meyer Lansky and other prominent gangsters were heavily invested in Havana, and politicians from Batista on down took their cut.
Through Lansky, the mafia knew they had a friend in Cuba. It was here that Lansky gave permission to kill Bugsy Siegel. Many of Batista's enemies faced the same fate as the ambitious Siegel. Nobody seemed to mention the many brutal human rights abuses that were a regular feature of Batista's private police force. Batista remained in power until 1944.
Batista again staged a coup in 1952 ousting Carlos Prio and becoming dictator of Cuba. After this point, Batista abandoned the Cuban constitution by allowing only staged elections where his victory was guaranteed. Large American corporations grew rich from Cuba's resources while the people of the country remained poor. Batista did not offer health care or education to his people At the time of his ousting it was estimated that 92% of the country was illiterate
Batista was ousted by Castro and the Cuban Revolution.
When Castro had been in power for a month, he came to the United States seeking aid. It was denied by the then President Dwight D Eisenhower, so he made a deal with the Russians who had been trying to get a foot hold in the Western hemisphere.
It is oppressed because they have fallen on harder times especially since the fall of the USSR.
The blockade was put in place especially by the white rich Cubans who used their influence here. It has not worked. He is the longest living dictator and has outlasted 9 presidents

Cuba is a soveriegn country with Fidel Castro as leader. Thus, the US cannot just interfere in the affairs of Cuba because the proper party to bring freedom thereat is the United Nations.

He probably isn't afraid of Castro. It is that Cuba doesn't have oil so Dubya isn't interested. Besides it is the stupidest thing in the world that one would think everybody should be like us. Picking on other sovereign nations will merely make us enemies we don't already have. They'll gang up on us as the barbarians did against Rome and we'll meet the same fate.

Taking your suggestion at heart (that President Bush is afraid to overthow Fidel Castro) I will answer with a no. He is a little more intelligent than that. It would be very foolish to do as you suggest, especially with all the problems we have in Iraq and Afghanistan.

JFK had a chance many years ago to keep Cuba from communism, but he let many die on the beach at the Bay of Pigs when Cubans who were in the US, tried to take their country back. They didn't have the military support they were promised.
Bush is not dumb. Castro has got Cuba where he wants it and until he dies, and some moderate takes over, you can forget it.

Probably because most of liberal America loves to vacation there, especially those in Berkeley. They also smuggle out those Cuban cigars. Overthrow their friend, don't think so. Sorry, it isn't the presidents call, unless they invade us, then nuke em.

There is worry about his successor being twice as violent and twice as politically active. I would much rather a dying old man then a young radical incharge of a piece of land in viewing distance of our shores. Would you?
