*Inventive spelling is the first stage.
*Word families are helpful to help children learn patterns in spelling. (cat rat fat mat)
*A word wall with the words written out with a picture or representation of the word helps them learn words by sight.
*Reading helps a lot. The more children read, the more words they learn.

The best way is to read and watch how people are spelling things in books. Eventually, seeing them enough you can recognize that it is spelled wrong and hopefully correct it. Also, note the correct spelling after you use spell check. I just recently forced myself to learn to spell the word decision because I was sick of spelling it wrong and watched what spell check changed it to. Also, sound the words out; it helps in some cases. There is always the technique of giving yourself spelling tests every week. Just grab a few words out of the dictionary and do drills on them every week. That is about all I can think of. Hope that helps!

games work! I remember when my teacher would give us a list of words to look at for five minutes. Then, she would divide the class into 2 groups and they'd get into two straight lines. One student from each of the groups goes up to the white board. The teacher gave them a word from the list and they had to write it out. Whoever finishes first and has the CORRECT spelling wins a point for their team. We had so much fun. We wanted to play all the time!
