The USA government refuses to help American women in the event of a divorce in Saudi Arabia get custody of their children. I thought they were suppossed to protect and help Americans abroad. There are cases where American women have tried getting custody of their children and the USA tells them they can't do anything regarding custody because they have to "respect Saudi Law".

this question can be wrapped up in one word...
JURISDICTION.
Saudi Arabia enacts its own laws concerning custody of children, America (each state) has its laws. And yes, there are disputes all the time, as to which court has authority concerning a child. There are specific international laws that address this question. It depends on where the child NORMALLY lived, and where any divorce may have been filed. If the child was born in the US, it is entitled to American citizenship, and if the divorce was in the US, it usually means the court here has the authority.
On the other hand, if an American woman, of her own free will, chose to live in another country with her husband, the children are born there, and the divorce is there... American law simply has no standing in their courts. And actually, that is entirely reasonable.
Many countries have agreed to abide by Hague convention rulings, for those times when there is a custody ruling, and one parent grabs the child, taking it out of the US (or other country). And, there are some countries that do not take part in that mutual agreeement.
It is a messy controversy, and there are not easy solutions.

Yes and? Those women should have known in what kind of culture they were marrying when they tied the know with a Saudi.

Arabia, whatever else you can have to say about it, happens to be a sovereign country, so what happens there follows local laws, and screw infidel views of what should happen. To boot, as has been mentioned above, Saudi Arabia is a vital trade partner that the US dare not antagonize about such matters as family disputes between private citizens.

So basically, if the fathers want to keep their children, educate them 100% as they see fit, and to Gehennah with the mother, there's essentially nothing she can do, and nothing the embassy can do beside voice protests, even if they decided it wise to get involved in the first place, which they probably don't

I do suppose they help the women go back home if they choose to. That's about the extent of the help they are alowed to provide, because while the woman is a citizen, the children essentially are not.
