As an African-American with a passing interest in European Football, some of the things I read about and see are sad and disturbing. The racism and violence that Eto'o and Ronaldhino have faced in La Liga is sometimes scary and I just don't understand how fans can take a GAME so seriously. I'm 100 percent sure the violence you see at football games won't ever make it to the USA because, first we could really care less about soccer and second Americans are generally used to cheering on and seeing different races playing together in competitive atmopsheres at this point in history. Crowds at sporting events in the USA can be tense, but generally we don't accept racism, throwing things, flares, or fires at sporting events, especially in the wake of the brawl between the Pistons and Pacers. I visited Europe and the Middle East this summer and I was surprised at how much racism and hatred is bubbling under the surface of a lot of these places where football is the number one sport (actually I wasn't surprised, I already realized Europe isn't as cultured as it tries to portray itself in relation to the US).

Nationalism and Racism run deep in Europe. Every team and country feel very strong about there national pride. Though racism and inequality are still very persistent. Many countries deal with unbalanced classes, and immigration. Soccer is just a vehicle of what the people feel.

No never happens. People from this country think we are so bad but I dont think they realize what happens overseas unless they follow the sports their which I have. I have seen many very ugly incidents this year in Italian football. In the US it is usually dealt very swiftly, condemed very stronlgy and swiftly by the public and if the crime is serious enough it is treated as a hate crime which usually carries stiffer penalties. The most I have ever seen is allegations that black hockey players were called bad things by other players but never the fans. This is rare and hockey is dominated by white players mostly Canadian. I think every incident has involved a Canadian player. Tie Domi is one that was accused of doing this a few years ago. This doesnt mean racism doesent exist in America. It is usually done more discreetly and not publicly, especially in a sports arena.

Not again. I think you need to see the mixture of races promoting the game and being involved in the game off the feild also.
Look at the NFL how many black managers and a first a black manager won the Super Bowl.
How many managers in the Primier league are black? How many managers in the Italian league are black, and so on.
The announcers for the games and the pre game shows how many are black.
The European pick on America as a racist country but I believe in sports America is far ahead of them.

I understand that all countries have their own particular situations regarding the ethnic populations within their borders. Race relations are always uneasy and hatred is the extreme example of intolerance.
That said, I find it difficult to accept the notion that thousands of soccer fans feel they have the right to act out their feelings by resorting to hooliganism surrounding soccer matches.
Soccer is a great sport and goons don't belong near the pitch.

People in U.S. don't care about violence in Europe. We just don't care. Period. If they wanna kill each other over soccer, that's their problem.
There is racism everywhere. Not just in soccer.
