First thing, it needs to weigh less than five pounds. When I got my laptop for college I decided that I wanted a really nice laptop with lots of features. After I used it for a month or so though, I realized that it was too heavy.
Second, Im sure that price is probably an issue. In that case I would probably recommend an HP (or Compaq. they are basically the same thing).
Third, opt for an AMD processor. Speed does not really matter because these days all processors are fast but if you can get a 64 bit that would be good.
Fourth, always remember that the secret to happiness in life is to always get as much RAM as you can possibly afford.

You know it all depends on how much you are willing to spend. I just bought my first laptop for $870. Sony Vaoi VGN-N250E. Its an awesome computer, i have a dell for 6yrs and i hated it. For me, its Sony! I love Sony products, i have a Sony digital camera that i love so of course i went with a Sony notebook. Ac er are good and cheap, Gateways are also pretty good. Don't get Dell, yes its cheap but you will end up paying more for it. There computers have way too many problems.

i'd bypass with the Macbook, yet for simplicity, likely pick the Microsoft workplace 2008 suite instead of iWork. also, ignore Bento 2. basically be particular you get the student less expensive once you order your computer. From Apple's homestead web page, you may seek for for the preparation less expensive by ability of typing "pupil" into the search bar. that's going to arise with a small photograph of a blackboard, i have self assurance. I actually have had my Macbook for over 3 yrs, and not in any respect had a difficulty previous the first year of assure, so purchase Apple Care on condition that you're truly demanding about it.

I would recommend a Dell, HP, or Gateway mainly because of their performance and tech support/warranties. I would get a laptop with a Intel Core 2 Duo (2.16GHz) processor, 2GB of RAM (if you are going to use Vista, 1GB for XP), 160GB hard drive, 256MB video card (good for displaying Vista properly and playing newer games). This setup, if shopped well, might set you back $2,300, maybe more if you get software and warranties.
