I've set it to hibernate when it reaches low battery. Now, it just shuts down without so much as an on-screen warning. I've checked my hard drive and I have more than 5 GB free space. My battery has been running poorly lately, but I don't see how that should affect anything.

It used to overheat, but that problem got fixed.

Would it be having the same problem again?

Does it do this if you remove the battery and run on AC? Is it going into hibernate or turning off completely? If it's shutting down rather than hibernating, it could be overheating or bad RAM.
