Hi! I'm 4 and a half weeks pregnant, and I was just wondering if the metallic taste is normal or not. I get it when I drink certain milks or certain foods. It seems like my taste is enhanced so that I can taste the iron and all of the metals in the food perfectly. Today I was drinking milk and I asked someone to taste it, and they said it tasted fine, while I felt like I was drinking liquid pennies! Is this normal? I know some people get it as just a taste in their mouth, but I have it only when eating certain things! (Any personal stories are welcome!)

In addition I have also been having VERY severe heartburn... not typical for me! is there any correlation (sp?) between the two?

Heartburn is caused by too much stomach acid, and the acid taste in your mouth is also caused by the heartburn. Tagment is the best heartburn medicine out there, but I would ask your doctor before you take anything. It would help the acid taste in your mouth disappear, but don't be worried. Heartburn is normal side effect during pregnancy.
You may want to simply adjust your diet a little. Stay away from spicy foods, and onions, as well as cabbage. Hope that helps!

when your pregnant a lot of things will change and one of them includes your taste buds and how things taste some things that you loved before you where pregnant you'll probably come to hate by the end of your pregnancy. And the other way around. But after you have the baby you will begin to get some things back to normal so you'll have to test around and see what you do or don't like. Thats just one of the joys of becoming a mother your body changes. Heartburn can be really severe in pregnancy, I had it really bad with all three of my kids I couldn't sleep at night until my doctor prescribed an antiacid for me to take. Ask your doctor about it. Until then try drinking something that sooths your stomach, eat some form of grain or bread to help absorb the acids. I always ate popcorn and a glass of chocolate milk.

Most definitely normal!! I couldn't eat normally for the first 14 weeks without things tasting off. It gets better though, and once cravings come into it you'll be eating all kinds of weird stuff anyway! The worst thing for me was not being able to cook raw meat,, the smell of it made me wanna puke!!

I've heard that this is very normal, though I've never had that happen. Where I live, we have this big paper mill &, you know the smell of newspaper? Well, I could smell it in the air no matter where I was in town. It actually gave me heartburn! To this day, I can't even stand the smell of newspaper when I'm NOT pregnant!

I've had this happen. It's not being able to taste the iron, at least it wasn't for me. It might be acid reflux. I know it sounds odd. I didn't have your classic "heartburn" but that's what it was.
