The scarecrow works very well with squirrels and raccoons.
Hot Pepper Repellent Recipe
- One chopped yellow onion
- One chopped Jalapeno pepper
- One tablespoon of Cayenne pepper
Boil ingredients for 20 minutes in two quarts of water. Let it cool and then strain it through cheesecloth. You can apply this with a pesticide sprayer or a spray bottle.
This will deter just about any animal from an area where it is applied. The only draw back is that it only lasts for three to five days.
The "Magic" Formula
- 8 oz. of any liquid dish soap
- 8 oz. of Castor Oil
- 1 gallon of water
Mix the Castor Oil and soap well. Be sure that it is mixed thoroughly then add it to one gallon of water and spray the entire area.
This is a simple and safe recipe and is supposed to work very well for many mammals.
"Scarecrow"
This is a motion-activated water "sprinkler." It shoots a 3-second blast of water when motion is sensed. It uses 2 cups of water each time it sprays and has a daylight sensor. It is manufactured by Contech Electronics. Some local area garden and hardware stores carry it.
This works especially well for squirrels, raccoons, deer, etc.

Take hot pepper sauce and dilute with water and put it in a spray bottle and spray it on the furniture.
The squirrels wont like the taste. You can also put anything noisy like foil pie plates and string them so that it is near the furniture, the noise and movement should scare them. I read that if you put cat or dog poop also that it will scare them off--I dont know if that is what you want near your furniture though. Play a radio or a tape of a dog barking to get them out of the habbit of chewing your furniture. If you dont have any other animals, put some food out for them but coat it with ex-lax and watch them go running.

If you just want them to stop eating or chewing on your things try painting the stuff with a mixture of linseed oil and Tabasco sauce. The hot mix will only take a small taste and they will not chew it again. I have used this on wood shingles to keep them from gnawing into the attic.

I just answered a similar question about rabbits.
I have a Jack Russell Terrier that keeps all critters away. Most terrier breeds, hound dogs, daschunds, will do the trick nicely.
They also make a motion activated sprinkler called Scarecrow.

Chili powder also works to keep squirrels away...its an eye irritant, that works better for a bird feeder though. But you could be creative with it.
