Cheney is ginning up for the war in Iran by his rhetoric. If they try it, they will be in a for a rude awakening.
Our Army is stretched thin as it is, sending the "surge" troops into Iraq with only 40% of the equipment required. So much for "support the troops"
Iranians aren't as dumb as he thinks they are. They also aren't going to roll over like Saddam's army did. The regular armed forces has an estimated 420,000 troops in three branches: Ground Forces, 350,000 troops; Navy, 18,000 sailors; and Air Force, 52,000 airmen. If you include the Revolutionary Guard they have upward of 540,000- 4 time the US forces in Iraq now.
Unlike Bush who seems hell bent on starting yet another war, Iran though their Grand Ayatollah, will muster the ire of all other nations against the US in the UN to resolve that issue. They will probably highlight the rhetoric used by Bush and his minions to say that they are instigators and make this country look even more foolish.
He has also said that when this whole Iraq thing is over, in the long run all the killing etc will just be a comma in history. (said 9/20/06-CNN interview)

Actually, the new Iraq government gets along with Iran quite nicely. We've created a new ally for Iran in the region - the only other Shiite dominated govt. around.
