Jack's group attacks the boys because to survive they need to make a fire. And to make a fire they need Piggy's glasses. So to steal the glasses they attack the hut in which Piggy is sleeping in and steal it. It was dark (at night) and Piggy didn't notice his glasses were missing until a while later.

I haven't read it in a while, but if i remember correctly:
Jack attacks the other boys because he feels that he should be the leader of the island instead of Ralph and his group, so by attacking the other group, he is able to grab the conch shell, which in the book, is a symbol of the leader of the island. He also takes Piggy's glasses which help with the making of a fire. He thinks that by having these items, he will be able to conquer the island.
Hope this helps!
