My best friends grandma just passed away. I want to get them something but I don't know what. They gave up sweets for lent, so cake or cookies is out of the question. What should I get them?

I think you could send them some flowers and a card. But I also think that going to the funeral would be a great sign of respect and it would prove to the family how much you care about them and want to support your friend. Best Wishes.

Possibly make them dinner or a special snack that isnt sweet. Showing that you care doesnt have to be edible, you can just give emotional support and talking with family members really helps to alleviate sadness.

How about an afghan? A plant? A food that isn't junk, like perhaps bran muffins or a loaf of homemade bread or something?

Give them the gift of your time. Go to the funeral, if you can. Drop by the house for the repast (gathering) and make yourself useful. Clear dishes, wash dishes, offer to tend to babies, etc. Express your condolences. Things like this matter the most.

A simple card, or a nice floral arrangement would be nice. What about a fruit basket? Its the thought that counts!

If they have financial needs, you can just make a donation to expenses. If they are doing ok financially, you can always make a donation to a non profit agency that represents some specific disease (american cancer society or alzheimer's association) if she was diagnosed with such, or if she was on hospice, you can make a contribution to that organization.
