How about affirmative action? Do African Americans take advantage of it? Is it beneficial to them? Are they the best person for the job and simply discriminated against? Also, the African American family would be a good topic. The closeness of these families is amazing. The grandmother is usually who everyone looks to for guidance and care. Sometimes she even cares for her grandchildren. Is this a disadvantgage to her children by not making them take responsibility for their own children?

That's not a lot of information to go on--so I'll jsut throw out some general ideas. BTW--ignore the racist remarks of the second answerer. Some people. . . .

1) African-American speech patterns (sometimes called ebonics) is often difficult for others to understand. Question: should the AA community make a greater effort to "speak as others speak?"

2) Does the middle-class AA community do enoug to help the large number of AA, particularly inner-city youth acheive economic opportunity?

3) We've seen instances of anti-Semitism among some African-Americans. Does this reflect a general sentiment or is it limited to a few individuals? Either way, what should be done about this?

There's other topics--but that's a start. I picked thoe issues because you said "critique."

first of all, the best way that i can think of to help you with your approach is to remember to keep it basic with what you're doing...giving your pro & con opinion on a particular issue. (the comment on food was a good one)

secondly, you have to critique AAs-are you interested in researching culture or history? culture would be subcatagorized to pick choices such as dress, music, language, or past history, or current history. there are lots of choices out here to consider...you may want to critique the history of hip hop music and how its evolved and your opinion as to the good and bad qualities of it....or the impact the urban dress style of african americans on society and how far reaching it is or is not, and again the pros and cons of it...the list is exaustive, and as you begin to research an idea will form in your mind to pursue...

PLEASE DO NOT approach a critique from a slanted viewpoint. its rude to assume that AAs who talk in slang (ebonics) and chase the rabbit that they need to talk like others ...that is very biased. why would that be nonconforming and to who is it non conforming to? also the comment about anti-semitism in AAs - every race has racist in it, so if some blacks are racists, why would you even write a critique to determine if this is a generally accepted notion amongst all blacks..thanks like extremists assuming a white people are prejudice...only extremist think that way...

these questions are highly slanted and although the effort is sincere, the unconscience racism is very apparent...making assumptions to prove about
AA instead of presenting the facts with the pros, cons, then your final opinion supported with your research!!

ps-read up on cultural diversity if you get a chance...you will understand why i questionedof ebonics being non conforming and to whom or why i commented that the suggestions made were a nice effort but biased....

best wishes with your paper!

Try to figure out why they gravitate to slummy areas and make no effort to improve anything . and try to do it without blaming everything on the white man.
