Its not new and not just in the US. But I like the way you think

Hardly. As well as the other suggestions above, violent crime is certainly up there.

Religion, overall, has been a positive influence on mankind (and I say that as a devout atheist) -- even with the genocidal radical Muslims on the loose.

Religion saved knowledge and learning that would've been lost forever after the fall of the Roman Empire. It has helped man think and conceptualize and ponder his place in the universe. It has given billions of people meaning and a source of inner strength during times of trouble, and much, much more.

Today, the people you are most likely to find working in homeless shelters and soup kitchens, those tending to AIDS-ravaged villages in Africa, and those opening up their pockets when natural disasters strike strangers halfway around the world are religious.

Certainly, religion also has been twisted and used as a reason for much evil. But then so have political systems of thought, economic systems and even schools of thought regarding things such as fine art and literature. Which goes to show that it's not the fault of religion, the fault lies within us.

I think the no.1 killer in America is heart disease, but I would
think the no.1 killer in Iraq would definitely be religion.

America? No. The biggest killer in the history of the world? Yes.

In America? No.

In other parts of the world? Certainly.

The U.S. is not prone to religious violence. Not in the slightest. Look to the Middle East for that.
