Not long ago and installed it into the laptop. My question is can I take the memory card out of the laptop (Compaq) and put into the desktop (Compaq) that I am on now?
If so where does it go in the desktop?

Memory dimms are different for notebooks & desktop computers.

Unfortunately, no.. the reason being, the memory sticks on the desktop are usually about twice as long as the ones in your laptop..
check at www.crucial.com or www.tigerdirect.com and look at Memory and it will show you the size differences..
