A shotgun wedding is where the couple is forced to marry, usually by parents but could be any reason including social mores, because the woman is pregnant. The origin is occasions in rural areas, where the groom would have a shotgun pointed at him by the father of the bride to ensure he said "I do."

They say way way back in the day, the father of the bride-to-be would hold a shotgun to the groom-to-be so that he would marry her even if he didn't want to. It was his way of marrying off his daughter to who she wanted.
