Mine is Alfred Hitchcock. He creates a feeling of suspense that no one else can possibly conjure.

Mine is David Lynch. He actually is similar to Hitchcock in many regards, as far as creating suspense and mood, etc.

John Ford. Every film of his I watch is completely believable, most centering on everyday life or events which were told in an 'everyman' way. Intense, beautiful cinematography whether in black and white or color, his characters always had morals or a distinct lack of them. Good vs evil. Right vs wrong. Still my favorite and I like a slew of directors such as Hawks, Wilder, Hitchcock, Lean, Cukor, Kramer, Spielberg, Scorsese, Kubrick, etc...

favorite director???!!!
Paul Thomas Anderson
He may not be as famous as other directors, but his movies are full of substance. Not your typical Hollywood director, his movies usually deal with some very intense themes. He develops his characters so well and loves them so much that you never get the feeling that he is judging his characters. Not to mention the dialogue seems more real than your typical movie. His camera work is amazing as well( see the Boogie Nights scene with the girl in the pool ).

Speilberg has the knack. Hitchcock's early efforts were excellent but his later work became very staged and robotic. I do not subscribe to the notion that he was a "master of thrills." The films VERTIGO, REAR WINDOW and NORTH BY NORTHWEST are preposterous, at best.

Has to be Kubrick. Nobody else ever elevated film-making into such an art form. And just look what he did to Spielberg! After they collaborated on AI (and I wish Kubrick had lived long enough to make that himself!) Spielberg's films have gotten edgier and much much better.
