I have tried to work this problem out on my own ... I will include the problem and my work.

Can someone please let me know if I have done this right ... if not can you tell me where I went wrong and possibly help me set up the equation right.

1. If I want to make the PERFECT 12 ounce cup of chocolate milk, it requires that the mixture is 42% Hershey's Syrup. What I have right now is 8 ounces of a milk/syrup mixture that I know (and don't ask how) contains 30% syrup. What must the syrup concentration be in the remaining mixture that I must add in order to achieve perfection?
x = (12/100)4
x = .12 * 4
x = .48 oz of chocolate sauce needs to be added to 3.52 oz of milk to complete the perfect chocolate milk mixture.

Thanks in advance,
Jennifer

I don't think you answered what they asked for, the concentration (% syrup) of the 4 ounces they must add to get 12 total ounces.

If x is that percent, then

.30(8) + x(4) = .42(12)

2.4 + 4x = 5.04

Solve this for x to get the concentration in the remaining mixture.

I don't think you're right. Here's my math, and see if it makes sense to you.

so first, if you have a 12 oz glass of chocolate milk, what is 42% of it, i.e., how many total ounces of chocolate syrup should there be?

0.42 x 12 = 5.04 oz

Then, to figure out how much you need to add, you need to know how many ounces you already have:

0.30 x 8 = 2.4 oz

Then subtract those two answers:

5.04 - 2.4 = 2.64

Now, you know you need to add 4 more oz of mixture to your cup, so

2.64/4 = .66% is your answer

Well I am not going to argue with the previous post.
Personally I would just keep adding pure chocolate until it was nice and chocolaty brown and then drink the milk.
From my vantage point 50% is not ENOUGH chocolate!! LOL!
