I have ownership of a domain name. let's call it WebX.co.uk - unfortunately someone else has the equivalent .com extension - in this case we'll call it WebX.com.

What can I do to take ownership of the first ten Google search results if someone types WebX ?
I want legal but sneaky techniques.

Should I link WebX.com to link farm sites so Google penalises that address? Or buy all the other WebX extensions and link to each other? Or work really hard to create useful sites and get other sites to link to mine?

Don't go the evil path. It will eventually come back to bite you in the butt. Build inbound links.
Most of the directories online charge a one time fee to review your site and add it to their index. Here are three of my favorites:

The more inbound links to your site, the better you will rank
with Yahoo / Google / MSN.
Also work on your meta tags. Here is an
article on how they work: http://www.richkahmer.com/meta-tags.html

Hi,
Change you Web site name; trying your methods is fruitless.

Trying to fool the search engines is a thankless task. They have computer science PHds developing their search engine spiders. Do you think you can compete with them? Not likely.

Your sneaky techniques are called "black hat" optimization. Won't work. The SEs are changing constantly. You cannot find out what they do or how they do it. When someone finds a crack, they seal it up.

Get this book: Search Engine Optimization - An Hour a Day by Jennifer Grappone and Gradiva Couzin. It's all you need to beat you competition.

Linking is important. SEs love links.

Work hard to create more useful sites. Get great software for building web sites. One that does SEO for you.

Here's my advice,

I encountered same problem with webstudios.com.

This was my first SEO project.

There were so many website in competition having domain names as webstudios.in, webstudios.us etc.

But i maintained my cool, instead of adding spams for other websites , I started positively creating a lot of links for my website having anchor text as : webstudios.com/web studios/ webstudios

And miraculously my website starts appearing on top. And there were other pages from my websites in top ten. Some articles went up having my link.

So, apply this technique to you website.......don't do anything negative........be positive................and you will be happy at the end results........

Enjoy your day

Note: I have use webstudios as dummy name, it's not the original name of the website i worked on. I cann't disclose the original name due to contractual bindings.

Try to follow Google's standards of getting listed. But I also suggest that you need to focus more on building traffic to your site by doing different web marketing efforts. In this case, when you already have the desired traffic, Google will be able to index your site ahead of your competitor.

Good luck!
