The simplest thing to do is to make sure you get it cut before winter sets in and to cut it a bit lower than normal.

In my area, I'm usually cutting my grass until early December. Starting in October, I lower my mower every other cut or so. I make sure that the grass is just over 2 inches in height for the winter.

If your grass is long all winter, you will be very susceptible to snow mold.
