Dear sir:

If there were no world as we know it, no universe as we have studied for thousands of years, just a lot of nothing, then there would be this huge void. I would compare it to looking inside of a large black plastic trash can late at night when there is no moon or star light to add tiny bits of illumination. Try putting the black plastic trash can over your head. Look around. What do you see? Probably nothing. And, that is what you would have, just a lot of nothing. There would not be anyone to talk to, work with, play with, and nothing to eat, drink, or breathe. so, you would die in a moment or two. There would be no funeral, and no one to grieve your loss. There would be silence, silence, and more silence. That is all.

A moot point, for if there were "nothing" how would you ask this question. It is actually a philosophical question similar to "if a tree falls in the forest, and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?"
Answer the age old question and you have the answer to yours.
Good question by the way...you are thinking

At some time in the past the universe did not exist.
At that time no one thought about it.
Then it came into existence, evolved into us and we thought about it.

Apparently that's what it was like before the Big Bang. Very hard to imagine. Especially if someone tells you that there was no "before", before the Big Bang.

Most likely some all-powerful God would come along and create it all, just to give us a hard time.

If those things did not exist then we wouldn't have to think about them. There would be no people.

Why think about it, if we wouldn't be here?
At least, there wouldn't be anything to worry about!
