It's a very good, but often unstable oxidising agent. Heavily used in the degeneration of organic chemilcals.

As the name implies it is a source of oxygen.

The oxygen is easily released and it is used for such things as clearing up gum problems as a special mouth rinse. It is also used in dieing hair.
