I don't like the word retarded, but a more mature & fun thing for an adult to do would be to have or attend a halloween party where they dress up in costume.
People don't like to buy/hand out treats to another adult. (It's cool to dress up when taking children out trick-or-treating, but not to expect any treats to be handed to YOU)... possibly your kids will share later.

No lol, as long as you dont mind the looks you'll get off the people handing out candy its great! Although I disapprove of anyone going out without a costume - they probably couldnt tell how old you are if you wore a mask.

If the 39 year old is actually expecting to get candy door to door, that's pretty bad. I don't spend my money to buy candy as a gift to the child trick-or-treaters to end up giving it to an adult who needs to grow up.

Trick or Treating is for the little kids. An adult can take his kids but should not expect any treats.

No one can stop you from tick or treating. If your friend wants to go this year....she could take you and other friends just to have a fun time. Or you could "borrow" someones' kids so it would look like she was watching them. :)

If you're over the age of 13, I wouldn't go trick or treating.

It's pretty cute if you have a kid with you. It's really lame if you are by yourself.
However, a new add campaign could help:
"Halloween it's not just for kid's anymore"
