I've heard of this before a long time ago. I think it's just a rumor because CSULB has a community of students to serve in the area, although UC Long Beach doesn't sound so bad. They did make the NCAA tournment this year. Go 49ers!

This is not true. This was a rumor years ago before UC Merced existed. It was debated whether to turn one of the CSU campuses into a UC or open up a new UC campus. The choice was to open a new UC campus and that is UC Merced.

Bahahahaha, yeah right.
It's not the most prestigious Cal State, so it wouldn't get turned into a UC for that reason.
Location is bad because UCLA and Irvine adequately cover the SoCal region it's in.
Finally, they just opened a UC. UC Merced. No reason to turn Long Beach State into a UC when you've just got a brand new one that hasn't even graduated a class yet.
