If he is indeed your "friend" then take him at his word.

You've told us that "he wants something to believe in but he want (sic) physical proof."

You obviously can't give him the "physical proof" he seeks so just leave him alone. He'll respect you the more for doing so.

And then, you will truly BE "a friend."

I look at the Bible as a history book in which some has not happened yet. Point out the prophecies and how the daily headlines are coinciding with the ones not yet fulfilled. I also think that while some will see Jesus others will see Captain Kirk. Angels or the Federation? Either way it is going to be awesome. How often would someone have to tell him the winning Lotto numbers before he would buy a ticket?

tell him that if he wants to BELIEVE in something, HE CANT ASK FOR PROOF. Let me explain: to believe, BY DEFINITION, is not knowing, is NOT having proof. For example, right now, you're reading this, you can BELIEVE that I'm a man, but you DONT KNOW THAT I'M A MAN because you've never met me and cant see me, etc. If you did know I was a man, you wouldnt JUST BELIEVE I'm a man, You'd JUST KNOW IT!!! Tell you're friend this: that belief is TO HAVE FAITH, and Faith, by definition, is the lack of knowing, the lack of evidence, it is blindly jumping off the cliff and hoping you land on another side. I know because i was catholic for 19 years, then athiest for 3 years, and now catholic again.

Suggest he read some books by Jean Paul Sartre, a famous existentialist. Basically, he's going to have to believe in himself and the general goodness of human nature.

Let him figure it out on his own. Let him read about a bunch of different theories and religions and decide. The more you try to convert, the further you drive him from religion.
