I do not have kids, but I am the only one out of my group who doesn't, and I have heard the following reasons:
1. Bassinets typically stay in the parent's room next to or near the bed during the first few months so that the baby is nearer for feedings and parents can easily "check in" on the little one. They are also quasi-portable, so they can be moved into a home office for the afternoon or whatnot, unlike a crib. My parents used one simply for the convenience of it.
2. As the baby grows older, there is less room for him/her to sleep and the baby does not need to get up as frequently, and so there is less reason to keep the baby right next to the bed. I am not sure where I read it, but in some parenting article I read that babies will sometimes sleep better in their own rooms. I know there are many who disagree with that, but that's what I read.
3. A third reason cribs are more common is the money factor: having a newborn is crazy expensive, and if you are already shelling out several hundred dollars for a crib, a bassinet may be more than you can handle.
4. Like everything child/baby related, I think that the safety of both cribs and bassinets has improved a great deal in the past. I remember the one that my folks used, and it was not as safe as they are now. As long as you buy them from a brand you trust and pay attention fo any potential recalls, I would imagine that they are both as safe as the industry requires.
5. I think that the advent of the Play-n-go playpen/crib/bassinet thing has also replaced the traditional bassinette to some extent. My friends and sister all used the insert that turns the playpen into a higher bassinette-type sleeper when the kids were tiny and then later used it for a regular playpen/crib-on-the-go. This is more portable and lasts longer than a traditional bassinette, even if they are not as frilly and pretty!

A bassinet is not a must, but some people enjoy having them. The reason so many people like them is because the baby can sleep in the your bedroom without taking up too much space. If you plan on breastfeeding, there are bassinets called co-sleepers that adjoin to the side of the bed so you can nurse the babe without taking him out or if you don't care to co-sleep in your own bed. One of the other posters was correct that these have weight limits and most babies grow out of bassinets in a couple of months. However you can do without those things, and just stick with a crib, depends on your personal preference. My husband and I just put the crib next to our bed for the first 7-8 months or so, then we move the crib to the nursery. There really isn't rules on furniture for the nursery. My husband and I are pretty minimalist. Our sons have a desk and a short coffee table in their room along with their beds. We have a shelving system installed in the closet so we didn't buy a dresser. We have some high shelves for special books and heirloom toys. We have a nice cedar chest for their toys. We have a rocking chair, but I have it in our living room since I prefer using it a lot during the day. I enjoyed having a rocking chair for infants. I actually inherited the chair my grandfather made for my parents when I was born. So it has a lot sentimental value. One of my sons LOVES to be rocked while the other was kind of indifferent to it. That one preferred being walked in a sling when he was cranky.

A bassinet is SMALL. It is a temporary thing, usually used in the parents' room if they want to keep the baby in their room with them, or sometimes in a two story house you will have a bassinet downstairs for naps. I think they are a silly thing; why not start as you mean to go on? Lots of people on this board are always asking how to make their baby who sleeps in a bassinet (or in their bed with them) to sleep in their crib. If you put your baby in a crib from day 1, you don't have that problem.

The bassinet provides easy access to baby in middle of the night. It's easily moved so you can have baby close to you during the day while you do housework or other chores & the smaller confinment makes babies feel more comfortable, like in the mother's womb. Experts suggest taking babies out of bassinets by the time they are about 4 months old or when they start rolling over, because baby could suffocate. Then, it is time to get a crib. I have crib & 2 bassinets. (twins)

That last longer. We had a crib and someone gave us a bassinet. Once the baby is able to move around more the bassinet is of no use because they could fall out of it. They are nice to have though, but I wouldn't spend a lot of money on one. Most playpens come with a built in bassinet now too.

The bassinet is smaller and can be kept in the moms room and can be moved around easily. The crib is bigger and will go in another room. The bassinet will only be used a short time while the crib will be used much longer. I never had a bassinet.

You only use a bassinet for a couple of months. The baby out grows the bassinet very fast. That is the reason of a crib. Keeps baby in.

I used the bassinet until my daughter grew out of it. That way, it could be put next to the bed and i could feed her through the night without getting up. Now she is 5 months and too large for it, but she sleeps through the night so the crib in the other room is perfect.

We tried using a bassinet for the first few weeks but ended up moving the crib in our room and it was so much better. The bassinet that we had was low to the ground so I had to bend over to get him not good because I had a c-section plus I don't think he was comfortable in it........He's been in his own room now with the crib since he was 3.5 mo.....It's just so much easier I thought to have them right there in the room with you for their first couple of months....

a bassinet is something u use for only about 2-4 mos. its soppose to be temporary and it is used so that in the first few weeks of life u don't have to keep on getting up at 3am and running across the hall. u just keep the small bassinet right by your bed and it is so convenient.
i didn't have a bassinet, i had the crib by my bed for a few months.
