And why in NFL do the athletes need all the padding/helmet ect. when in Rugby you do not.

NO, they are different games. I don't know enough about rugby, but I would guess the dynamic of having to run full speed into a person to try and block him/knock him down isn't there.

Rugby and American football are quite different. They might sort of be in the same "family" but not the same at all, no.

In Rugby when you get hit you kind of know it before it happens. In the NFL you can be running while looking for the ball, then get hit immediately. Just watch videos on Youtube to get an idea of the differences.

It's also important to remember that sports get safer because of public outcry for it. It took the death of Dale Earnhardt for Nascar to implement safer walls and "head restraints", both of which have probably saved a lot of injuries and maybe even a life or two. As UFC got big, it had to change its rules too (to make it safer). Rugby isn't as big a deal as football, so nobody's running around saying "we need to make rugby more safe".

No, they are not the same. NFL players need protective equipment to reduce injuries. Rugby players usualy don't build up as much speed, so their injuries are not usually as severe.
