My 9-month-old daughter has an ear infection, and she was prescribed 1 tsp of amoxicillian twice daily. I tried to give her the first dose, but she obviously hated the taste and just spit it out. She probably swallowed less than a quarter of it. What should I do? How can I get her to take her medicine?
Thanks.

I used a syringe that the pharmacist gave me. 1 tsp is a LOT, though, and I can't just shove it in one go. I laid her back and held her head, but she just let it bubble out of her mouth around the syringe and down her chin.

My son is the same way, and he's now 3! I always mix the meds in with either juice, applesauce, or yogurt. The yogurt (strawberry or raspberry for him) works the best.

All good answers. Easy way is the syringe. My boys hated any medicine even the fruit kind. Fill the syringe to the dose and put it to the back and side of her mouth and squeeze. She'll swallow it because its to far back to spit out. Gag reflex doesn't work when your back that far. Don't talk about what your doing and do not mention the word medicine. Just do it. She'll get it in her and she'll be on her way to getting well. Tho check with your pharmacy they will mix it up with selected flavors but amox. usually taste good already. Good Luck Mom and don't be nervous she will catch on and throw a fit before you even get started.

Our doctor told us this. Hold the child like a football with the head in your armpit / near your elbow. Your arm on the outside will hold one of the child's arms while the other arm is held next to your body. Then with the head still and tilted back slightly try using a plastic syringe, in the mouth, NO NEEDLE for giving kids medicine. It helps that as you do this a little at a time you pinch gently the noes making a swallowing reflex in the child. It sounds difficult to explain but it is actually pretty easy if you can imagine my description. Good luck.

wow I am so going thru this right now!! My daughter is 9 months old too and has a double ear infection and Im giving her the same dosage of that yucky pink stuff. She hates it and squirms when I try to put the thing in her mouth, its so heart breaking making her drink that stuff and also nerve racking when she spits it all back out, I now just add it right in with her milk! No problems! Its fine to add it to her milk.. I asked! Just make sure she drinks it all.. if she dosent drink all of her bottle then try making a 2 oz bottle of juice and adding it to it at snack time! Good luck and don't worry its only 10 days! Hoping she feels better soon! I know I can't wait til my little one does! :)

I run and in home day care and I care for a five year old and have cared for him for three years. They always ask to have the medicine put into a suppository. I know the pharmacy can add flavoring to it for an extra charge but I know with my daughter it has helped in the past. I also know that I have also put the medicine into the bottle or milk and mix it up most of the time they wouldn't even know it was in the cup as long as they didn't see you put it in there. Good Luck!!

Mix the amoxicillan with a little water in the syringe. Make sure to put the syringe to the side of her mouth. This makes it harder to spit out.

When you use the syringe, make sure you aren't shooting it over her tongue. Put it as far back on the SIDE of her mouth as you can so it doesn't hit her taste buds as bad. Then, sounds bad, but hold her mouth closed and blow in her face. This will help to get her to swallow it.

Liquid medications often don't taste good, but numerous flavorings are now available and can be added to any liquid medication. Ask your pharmacist. If they aren't available, you may be able to mix the medicine with a little fruit juice.

Talk to your pediatrician to see if it can be added to milk or water. Sometimes you can mix stuff like that. Surprises me that she didn't take it because most of those are flavored like bubble gum or fruit or something. They do have, at the wal mart here, stuff you can add to medicines to make them taste better. It's OTC but I'm sure your pharmacist would know if you called them.

place the syringe in between the top and bottom jaw on either side of th emouth so she has to swallow it or you can try to plug her nose to make her swallow it that way
