This is a 3/4 horse power compressor and it will probably not have any gas included so, I was wondering, what are the steps necessary to fill it up? Would I need to do any welding? Are there any precautions to be aware of regarding the gas? Thanks in advance.

This is not a DIY project.
Call for service. If it is bad a bad compressor compare the cost of replacement to the cost of repair.

Anything to do with refrigeration has to be done by a certified technician as per federal law. However in order to change a compressor first you need a recovery system to remove the refrigerant, there are no service tappings on a refrigerator so you will need to use either a mechanical or braze type fitting to puncture the pipe without freon loss. This being done the new compressor "which you can't buy without a license" can be installed by brazing the pipes to the compressor, I would recommend a filter dryer in the suction line to ensure no old contaminants can get to the new unit, this being done you will need to evacuate all air and moisture from the system with the use of system gages and an evacuation pump after which you can fill the system with the required weight of freon "you will need a refrigerant scale for this " oh! and did I mention that you can't buy freon without a license. Buy a new refrigerator 'cause unless the one you have is a really expensive one you don't want to hire someone like me to change that compressor.

once you get all the equipment to properly service the unit,
evacuation, reclaim tank, vacuum pump, service valves, the epa certification to handle refrigerants, the knowledge, the
torches and gas and other materials, you could buy at least
three new refrigerators. just to let you know, it is far often overlooked that the relay on the compressor has simply failed
a $15.00 part on most models, a lot of crooked techs will tell you that the compressor has failed which may not be the case, it is just to make them more bucks. if the system hasn't
been compromised (ie, no service ports have been added),
then the most likely problem is stated above. just another note next time you post please indicate the model of the appliance you want us to try and provide an answer to. good luck.

Compressor piping needs to be silver soldered or silflossed. You cannot buy the freon without a license either. You need a licenced tech or buy a new frig.

I'd go for a new refrigerator.
