Distribute the -1 through the second set of () first, so that you can add them together, so it becomes:
(5w + 7) + (-2w - 5) = 53
The combine like terms on the left side, like so:
[5w - 2w] + [7 - 5] = 53
3w + 2 = 53
Subtract 2 from both sides
3w = 51
Now divide both sides by 3, so it becomes
w=17
