I'm a 33-year old who's never been to London (or the UK for that matter). I'll be hanging out there for 4 days in mid-April on my way back to Chicago from a business trip in Chennai. Looking for thoughts on which part of town to stay in (Kensington, Knightsbridge, Islington, etc.).

Not worried about getting around to see the sights since I'll use the Tube or Taxis. Just looking for someplace with great pubs within walking distance and good hotel options.

Speaking of pubs...any recommendations? Not into the lights, loud music & dancing in the clubs...I'm more the hole-in-the-wall kind of guy. Just want to throw back MANY pints and hope nobody minds a drunk Yank drinking with them.

Give me some good suggestions, and I'll be happy to return the favor if anyone needs to know what to do in Chicago down the road.

Thanks!

You don't mention your hotel budget but there's a Premier Travel Inn right on the South End of London Bridge - they're a basic budget chain but clean and reliable with decent sized rooms this situation is excellent.

For Pubs, you'd do well to look at a site www.beerintheevening.com and see what people have to say.

The best old fashioned pubs (no music, no dancing, just excellent beer and chat) tend to be in the financial district (near the hotel recommended above). The pubs in the West End tend to cater for tourists and are rubbish, to be honest, unless you really know where to look.

Must-drink in pubs (all within walking distance of that hotel, and can be found with a search on the website above) are

The Market Porter (in Borough, always has about 10 different and excellent beers on)
Ye Old Cheshire Cheese (off Fleet St, where Samuel Pepys used to drink)
Williamsons Tavern (off Bow Lane, with one of the oldest licences to sell alcohol in London)

to name but a few...

In the West End (the more 'trad' tourist area) look for
The Red Lion (Crown Passage, off King St, off St James' St)
The Red Lion (Waverton St, only a few mins from the above).

Buy yourself an A-Z map book and walk around as much as you can - you'll see loads more of the city and it's much more do-able than most people think! It only takes about 30 minutes to walk from St Paul's Cathedral to Trafalgar Square for example and it's much more pleasant than taking the tube.

Enjoy!

Ok ...pubs ...jeepers where do you start! I work in the city (known as the square mile) and i go to the St Pauls Tavern in Moorgate. Proper pub good food loads of women !!
If your budget allows stay in Knightsbridge , there is a hotel on Sloane Square (the name eludes me) that i have stayed in , and it is top notch ! You have all the nightlife of Chelsea's Kings Rd staying in that area . Don worry about being a drunk Yank , i work with several and they seem jolly enough, bit over -patriotic at times - but hey!
this is the hotel http://www.sloanesquarehotel.co.uk/special_offers

Enjoy your stay buddy.
