Once I saw an older guy drive his car right into a telephone pole. It just took the lower section of the pole out as if it had a perferated line. As soon as I saw it happen, I told the person to stop the car I was in and I ran over to the car. By now the car was on fire and I opened the door and pulled him out. I was half way carrying him away from the burning car, he stopped me and spit out his false teeth. They were smashed to pieces, it was all pretty bloody. He said, "Well, looks like I'll need to get another set of choppers."
I don't know if I saved his life or not - there's no way of telling what would have happened. I have to say it was all just a gut reaction on my part. I just got out of the military, this was during the Viet Nam War, and the first aid training just took over. I huddled him down, kept the growing crowd back, and was screaming at everyone I could make eye contact with to call an ambulance. When the paramedics got there, I went back to my ride, got in, and continued with the conversation we were having - as if it never happened. In fact this is the first time I told anyone about this - it happened in 1974.

I didn't. Not that I can remember of. But you reminded me of one episode with my neighbour. He used to be an alcoholic, heavy one. And once he was walking by the block of flats. Being heavily drunk, the walk of his was far from straight and energetic, as you can imagine. And by the terrible (or lucky) coincidence a child from the flat above (some 6 or 7 floor) fell out of the window right on his "soft" shoulder. So the guy become nearly a hero - saved a child "unconsciously" and had been everywhere in the local news papers the next day. The doctors said afterwards that apparently because the "saviour" was that drunk the collision between him and the child as well as the consequences of it were greatly softened. That's how without any thought you can save a life... in this life.

I pulled my ex-girlfriend's 3 year old out of a surprisinglly deep pool (came past my waist) on Blackpool beach about 6 years ago. It was a gut reaction and I absolutely hated all the fuss that ensued because I thought that it was something that anyone would do I just reacted quicker than anyone else that was there at the time.

I think most of us have saved a life at some point without realizing it..A few kind words when someone is down or some money in a charity box..Other than that,i haven't actually witnessed my saving of another's life...

I saved two lives. One was a little girl who had electrocuted herself and wasn't breathing - two breaths-of-life brought her around. That was just an instinctive response when I saw her lips turning white. The other was a young woman who had a life-threatening disease of a mastoid bone (behind her ear), and I paid for her surgery. She was just a friend of my wife's family. (This was in the Philippines - no medical plan.)

I did unknowingly when I was a child. I was out in our yard when I saw smoke coming from our next door neighbor's house. I told my Grandparents and they called the fire dept. When they got there, they found the man in his bed and got him out.

Yes, one of my classmates at primary school when we were at swimming. Only about 3 feet of water. She was at the bottom of it and I dragged her out. Neither of us could swim at the time. Scary!
