Good grammar is a sign of intelligence. You are eventually going to have to go to work. No matter where you work, some level of professionalism is going to be required. Memo's, email, and such. Having proper grammar (or at least decent grammar) increases your chance of people taking you seriously as a professional. If you send out emails or marketing information with grammatical errors people are going to think you are a joke and it will make you look sloppy!

Knowing and using good grammar isn't just important for written work, but also when you speak. First impressions are important. Our first contact with most people is usually verbal, so spoken grammar helps you make a good first impression. Think about job interviews--a well-written resume and job application will get you an interview, but if you use poor grammar, it makes you sound less intelligent and even less educated than you are. If you are interviewing for a job that requires good written and oral skills, using poor grammar will blow your opportunity. Good oral grammar skills may also rub off on your associates. My mother regularly corrected my spoken grammar, as well as that of my brother and sister. As a result, we all have good written and spoken grammar. Because of this I regularly corrected my son's grammar from the time he could speak. As a result, he speaks and writes very well. If you speak well, your spoken English will be the best English tool your children will have.
Journals came after my time, so I can't offer any knowledgeable suggestions on what to include, other than your own thoughts (as long as they are ones you won't mind their being read by your teacher). You could use it as a diary on what is going on in your life, your family, your school, etc. You could also include your hopes, dreams, and plans for the future.

This question has very practical answers.
1. Good grammar reflects on the type of education that you got.
2. When one writes, and someone else reads it, it can make the reader uncomfortable or even confused to read something that has poor grammar in it.
3. Job interviews require that you have a good command of your grammar. It leaves a poor impression on the interviewer if he or she notices how badly you use verbs, tenses, adjectives, etc. in your conversation.
4. Business letters require for you to write with correct grammar. If not, it becomes atrocious to read.
5. If you never learn good grammar, you pass the same thing on down to your children because of your poor usage at home.

People notice good grammar just as they do bad grammar. You may be treated with a little more respect by using good grammar.

Resumes, job applications, essays for college/job [like concluding the effects of a project]. Even with computers, you can lessen spell check time and will seem like a more professional person overall.

It's an audible sign of your intelligence to others who don't know you, for one thing.
