A gynecologist is a special doctor for women. Gynecologists specialize in women's health, particularly health of the reproductive organs, urinary tract, breasts and STDs.

An obstetrician is a doctor who specializes in pregnancy health and baby delivery.

Usually, these doctors are both obstetricians and gynecologists, hence the term Ob/Gyn.

The gynecologist is important to YOU, because you're 16, and you need to make sure all your woman parts are healthy. Some people say that you should wait to see the gynecologist till you are 18 or sexually active, but this is actually WRONG.

If you are old enough to menstruate, it is important to get checkups to make sure your reproductive organs are healthy. Waiting till you are 18 or till you have sex may be too late to locate problems. Many female health problems start well before the age of 18 (like endometriosis and ovarian cysts), and should be treated/controlled as early as possible.

The ob/gyn is a woman's best friend. They are what I call a "girly doctor". The ob stands for obstetrician (prenatal and pregnancy doc) and the gyn stands for gynecologist (all other girl related issues like birth control, menopause, and overall well women exams). Most healthcare professionals in this practice are both obstetricians and gynecologists. Hence ob/gyn. I hope that helps!

The OB/GYN is a women's physician. The OB stands for Obstetrician which is a doctor that deals with pregnancy. The GYN stands for gynecologist. The physician handles women's issues as well as yearly well visits. It is important to have a yearly exam by a GYN if you are sexually active. The GYN does a yearly pap smear to look for cervical cancer.
