my b/f sister is 7 months pregnant and has mentioned she is to employ a doula at the birth.
We must be living in a cave or something - we've never heard of a doula - can anybody explain what they do and how much do they cost.

They are about £300-£400.

They support the mother (and sometimes father) through the whole birthing experience. Usually doula's are brought in earlier in the pregnancy to help the mother and put her mind at rest. She's a person that knows everything about pregnancy and will answer any questions the parents have. She will be the birth partner if that's what is wanted, otherwise she will be there to support before, during and after the whole birthing thing.

If you watch disconery health on sky channel 264 and 265 i think, theres a programme called mum + one, and this will show you all about it.

Basiclally there not qualified medically but have exp in childbirth, they will really do what you want, even after the birth with helping about the house, really there there to support you.
