I always take a curling iron. I have packed it in checked luggage and in my carryon. Either way. The shape of it on xray may cause them to open and inspect the bag it's packed in.
I've also taken hot rollers. I think this gadget must have a threatening look on xray - maybe the metal in the rollers looks like ammo or something! Whatever they're packed in always gets inspected.

Only in your Checked Baggage, not in your carry on luggage.
