Gold was discovered in 1848 at Sutters mill by workers building a sawmill. Pea sized nuggets were found in the tail race of the mill. James Marshall took all of the glory for it but he couldn't even determine if it were gold or not. As far as i know children were not building the mill. And the first miners there in 1849 were from San Francisco and towns close by. I am sure there were children of miners present and working but i have never heard of an organized child labor being used. The Chinese miners were exploited and is a very interesting and publicized story.
